6 Online 营销学 Mistakes that Will Kill 您r Business

6 Online 营销学 Mistakes that Will Kill 您r Business

It’s not just quality output 您 get when 您 invest in a relationship with pros, it’s a new perspective.

那 is it.

例如,绝对有一个利基市场“ferrarri lovers”, but they don’t have a common 问题 to solve, they simply share a common interest.

may the force be with 您 !

So point on with this post. I love it and hope others can benefit from it. Thank 您.

  8. 其实我喜欢“common 问题” definition because it matches more closely to a product 您 might be able to sell them. To me it’s a helpful way of making sure

Anyway, I think 您’re right on when 您 talk about the need for some kind of plan. But I can’成为唯一不这样做的人’t get around to this, am I? Do 您 have any before-and-after case studies of people who have actually pushed through and made simple business plans?

  9. I agree with 您r ‘看起来像个贱人’ point. Just curious if 您 have a list of recommended web designers or web design companies that deliver the professional look that 您 described?

Also, 您 talked about not having to mortgage 您r house, but what is a reasonable expectation to pay for these services?

But since then, I have changed my attitude and now I carefully follow these steps for my business. It is essential if 您 want to have any success in a business.

  12. Thank 您 for this tips, it’s incredible how usefull they are, when 您 are a beginner 您 read so much resources in a day, how to do this and that but, at the end, a simple to do list is exactly what we need. A list of arguments 您 need to be focused on!

  13. I like the 红色字体! I was just thinking about this how comfortable we can become by learning so much and not applying it! 什么 about just dropping in to see clients and leaving an 文章 or 某事 您’学过了吗?

    Love 您r stuff!

Thank 您 for helping me see what was holding me back and get me moving toward my goal again.

与我交谈的大多数人都害怕将事情缩小到一个小众市场,因为他们’re afraid of “all the sales they’ll lose” –实际上,与事实相距无远。

  16. 的definition between a niche and a demographic is uber useful –许多人(包括我在内)经常使他们感到困惑和/或互换使用这些术语。

Niche is difficult to define though, and like another commenter here, although what 您 say is right, I’m not sure 您r definition of niche tallies with mine.

I’d say that 您r niche is “what 您’re about” and 您r demographic, or target market, is “who 您 talk to”.

For example, 您 might talk about funky email marketing (your niche) to stay-at-home moms in Quebec (your target market)

Or 您 might teach Vespa maintenance (your niche) to Italian guys who don’没有足够的钱购买新的踏板车(您的目标市场)。

I particularly like 您r point about all learn and no action. Definitely applies to me – and, I’会打赌,还有很多其他人正在读这篇文章。

  18. Wow! Great information in this 文章, really grabbed me. 的whole concept about marketing to a demographic vs a niche really resonated with me and I can completely relate and when I get honest with myself I’营销对象是人口而不是利基市场。

    Thank 您….

  19. These are all great points Mel. Thank

那’s pinned up on my wall. 的resources gathering folder is now officially closed.

I especially like #1: A 浮躁的态度. When someone in 您r organization is not 100% on board with what 您 are doing it will be obvious to 您r end customer and bring the morale of the entire company down.

So, do everything 您 can to target the right niche and run the best marketing campaign 您 can but do it only if 您 are excited about it and believe in it.

  22. 这真的很整洁-我认为找人“passion” is not necessarily a niche or 某事 that can be targeted.

Brian is right in that most people need to solve a 问题

什么 about folks who buy for pleasure?

您可能去过“trouble”来建立一个信息捕获系统,但是如果你马虎了’定期与这些客户保持联系…you’re setting 您rself up for failure.

的“all show..no go” in number six really comes back to bite 您. I view countless people in forums and chat rooms who have learned a lot about the business. Most have an opinion on everything. I look at their number of posts and wonder what they are thinking! 您 can’t spend 您r life on forums and expect to make any money.

它’s easier to hang out all day in forums, pontificating, than plan 您r work and work 您r plan.

谢谢 for 您r post, Mel. Very pointed and well written. It makes 您 examine 您rself. 那 can be uncomfortable!

In my own business, providing home care, especially for seniors, the tendency to think in generalities is rampant. 的ability to move beyond that, to focus on the needs of pretty specific niches is key.

的needs of a spouse providing care for a loved 一 with dementia are very different from a senior who needs help with some subset of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

Excellent points, well made. Thank

  25. 的part that particularly hit home for me was #6.

我和我的导师讨论了一下,他直言不讳地说“planning is good, but doing is better. Stop thinking about what 您 need to do and just start doing it.”

Taking a step back and realizing that 您 will need to INVEST time is huge. 谢谢 for the reminder!

  29. 我当然在这篇文章中看到了一些自己—thank 您 for the gentle tap on the shoulder.

So if 您 have an idea 您 can always launch a bare bones version — 您 don’t need to look like a Fortune 500 company. But just make sure whatever 您 have, whatever 您 offer, it works, and solves the 问题 您 claim it does.

I’m not going to argue anything with 您 (because 您r post is superbly awesome).

But can 您 explain more about targetting a niche? Where I believe that this point is most people failed to understand.

I’m “gunna” work on it 🙂 –但说真的,这一点对我来说非常正确。

  35. First, 您r #1 point is a great reminder for ALL business owners, no matter what 您’re selling! I have been guilty of this 一 and it’s 100% true that a bad attitude will bring 您r business down. I have now delegated the things 我不’t like to do so that I can focus on all the things I love, allowing me to be 热情ate about my industry again.
Preach what 您 teach, right? I’m in the midst of a complete website over-haul. 的old site was antiquated and difficult to navigate. 的new 一 will be worth the $6k or so I’m investing. I’m forward 您r 文章 to the designers and highlighting the MailChimp comment!
Lastly, 您r “gunna” comments hit me square in the gut! I dabble in free-lance writing, but spend more time reading about how to write than I spend actually writing!
If 您’re going to be successful in any business, DIVE RIGHT IN and start swimming! 的water is just fine.

  36. Wow these are spot on, Mel. Quite uncomfortable reading though as

  37. Some great tips..Adding a newsletter to 您r site is definitely 一 of the most important things for repeat visitors. Even though people may bookmark 您r site, they may still forget about it. Make it easy for them to remember!

@ Aquif /尼克:我’d say a niche is a specific group of people who share a 问题 or a need.

One other thing, using Outlook for 您r newsletter not only makes 您 look cheap, it’s risky – it’这样太容易使每个人都看不到地址,或者在添加或删除订户名称时出错。

您 might be interested to know that I haven’t订阅了新闻通讯,因为目前尚不清楚’与订阅copyblogger RSS不同。

(我知道我’m guilty of it too!)

Part of it is having a great, everyday attitude towards 您r business. Always moving forward on at least issue on 您r “to-do”清单。评论。参与。写作。等等。

But the other part of it is handling 您r stress levels. No matter how positive and “get-go” 您r attitude is, if 您 don’t know how to manage 您r stress, 您 can burn 您rself out quick, 和n 您 really are stuck with a “sucky attitude”.

  41. Wow, 一 问题 with being on the other side of the world is that I wake up 和re’在我面前有46条评论’我什至吃过早餐!

@ 文斯, the narrower 您 can define 您r niche the better. If 您’re having 麻烦 working out how to market to 您r niche then it’可能范围太广。

是的,我’m collecting names and emails via the VIP signup box in the sidebar as 您 said. It is in the sidebar, yes? (realised late last night it wasn’所以在午夜把它放在那里… LOL)

Glad to hear 您r redesign worked, heading over to check it out now. 🙂

Assuming 您’重新定位实际拥有法拉利的法拉利爱好者– because they’ve got the money to spend on 您r products – what are 您 going to talk about with them?

您’ll also be talking about subjects such as: how to protect 您r Ferrari’s paintwork, theft prevention, new gadgets that can be installed, how to wash it 您rself and get that professional shine. All 问题s that 您’re solving, yes?

  42. @ Brian, --

@ Mars, may the Force be with 您 as 您 take ACTION! Go for it and let us know how 您 go.

一世’ve made every 一 of these mistakes and more. Great to hear 您’ve broken out of that and are getting the results 您 deserve.

@ Jason,查看“带笔的人” http://menwithpens.ca/ 詹姆士 and his team do brilliant work. Not cheap, definitely brilliant. (Johnny Truant) http://johnnybtruant.com/

As to pricing, how long is a piece of string? Know how much 您 can afford and invest as much as 您 can in it. Check out a designers work and see if 您 can find referrals from their clients.

@ Jessica, thank 您. Let me know if I can help 您 with the launch at all.

    @ Jon-Mikel, Bad Brains?

@乔希,我’m happy to have made 您r day!

一世’我学会了对我的阅读很挑剔– as 您’ve noticed, 您 can spend all day reading good stuff but nothing gets done.

@ Jerry, I was wondering what 您 meant by ‘red font’然后我开始输入对评论的回复… It’s nice isn’t it – very unusual.

您’没错,很容易阅读信息,但是它赢了’t make 您 any money until 您 apply it.

@ Jennifer, please invite me to that house when 您’ve got it.

“Yes, narrow 您r niche down.

  44. @ Rochelle, 您’re welcome.

Target 标记et is 某事 else again from Niche and Demographic. 您r target market is where 您 describe 您r ideal client, what they’喜好,购买地点和方式,喜好,厌恶,个性,阅读和观看内容以及听取的内容。

您r niche is what 您 do for (solve) a particular group of people who have that need (problem) in common.

您 know what? If 您 work on 您r definitions, 您’re going to get there. Because whatever 您 call them, 您’重新缩小范围并具体化。

@ Renee, let me know if I can help 您 with narrowing down 您r niche at all. Good luck with the clarity – it always helps.

@ Mike, I KNOW! Copybloggermakes it so hard! Bad Copyblogger…. LOL.

    I’ll, um, get that ‘信息迷匿名’我不久后网站开通’我已经绕过了‘拖延者-匿名’ website. 😉

它’s too easy to get overwhelmed with the marketing promises and yet never apply it to 您r own business.

  45. @ Brian, sorry to hear about 您r experience in SF. Don’t 您 hate it when 一 person has the power to bring everyone else down?

但是我们必须相信我们’re doing and why we’重新做。

@ Lawton, finding people with a 热情 for what? If 您’ve got a 热情 for 某事 then 您’ll be wanting to improve how 您 do it, to do it better, faster, cheaper – there’s 您r ‘problem’ narrowed down.

Re 您r question on need vs desire 和 Iphone (yes, I want 一.

@ 史蒂夫, 您’re absolutely right. I was nodding all through 您r comment. Totally spot on.

我记得IttyBiz的Naomi曾经评论过,每天在Twitter上花费五个小时并称其为‘Marketing’ was just deluding 您rself. so much easier to be busy than to be effective.

@ Bert, 您r niche is helping provide home care for seniors? 什么 an awesome niche to be in. And 您’re spot on about generalities 和m not applying to everyone. Sounds like 您 may have learned that the hard way?

Stay At Home Mums (or Moms, sorry) is a demographic and is very broad as 您 said. Healthy eating can be applicable to anyone – why is this specific to SAHMs? How do the two tie together? Or are 您 more interested in the healthy eating, and SAHMs are 一 aspect of 您r marketing?

独特而具体– I can read about healthy eating AND SAHMs on a million blogs and forums. Why would I read 您rs above anyone elses? Answer that and 您’ve got 您r niche.

Mind 您, the flip side is that for those of us who have that realisation and decide to stick it out, there’随着时间的推移竞争减少。

Make 您r sign up obvious. Top right of the sidebar is a good place, or even a pop-up (personally, 我不’t like them, but 您 might). Promote the sign-up regularly. See how Sonia added it to the end of my post? Nice and easy suggestion to help people, no hard sell.

Mention it on 您r blog posts – people often don’t visit 您r actual site. Blog readers may not realise it’s there.

LOL.

它’s a social beastie that will sour and wither when kept inside. Let 您r knowledge out with 您r own personality stamped on it and be amazed at 您rself. 🙂

@ Amrit, Right. Better to get 某事 happening and take action than wait until it’s perfect.

@ 阿奇夫,我’m not exactly sure what 您’在这里问我,对不起。 它’s very broad and general, how do 您 market to that?

他们’ve all got a specific 问题 that 您 can solve, and 您 can target 您r market towards that 问题.

@ Nick, 您r business SHOULD be targeting a niche, or it’将会迷路。不‘if’ 您r business targets a niche – if it doesn’t瞄准利基然后’不可能长期开展业务。

And 您r right, don’t describe 您rself in general terms when there’s 某事 specific that 您 do.

    @ Elle, 您’re welcome, glad it’s helped 您.

  48. @ AJ, bookmarking 您r site is good, but people very rarely remember to go back.

@ Jodi, heat?

    @ Bert(再次),好帖子!

And it keeps 您 您ng, I’ve been told.

(一世’m pretty sure that’是的,如果我愿意,Brian将会纠正我’m not)

@ Paige,我’m nodding along with 您 here. 那里’s power in momentum.

和我’m hearing 您 on the stress levels and burnout. Been there, burnt that…

  49. 您 hit me in the gut with this post. Especially the part classifying a niche. Had to re-read this post a few times to get past my first reaction. Wow!

I like 您r idea of having a business plan for the website. I thought about that but just shrugged it off, like 您 said, thinking it was only for regular businesses. 那 is an excellent way to incorporate goals into 您r business and get ideas going. Hmmm… “gunna” have to check out 您r site 🙂

Here’s the link: http://www.amazon.com/Motivation-Goal-Setting-Goal-Setting/dp/1564143643

  50. G’Day 梅尔
您r post is full of sound and valuable advice.
当然,那只是意味着我’约翰·伍登的生活证明’s observation “It’s what 您 learn after 您 know it all that counts.”
I think a demographic can be a niche if 您 must use that word. But they usually aren’t,因为作为一个可行的目标市场,人口通常不会’狭义地定义。
    Make sure 您 have fun.

  51. Love this list, especially the comparison between marketing to demographics or marketing to 您r niche. I had never considered it like that, thanks for the great info

我认为面对一个人很好’s 问题 instead of just finding an excuse.

  53. Make 您r sign up obvious. Top right of the sidebar is a good place, or even a pop-up (personally, 我不’t like them, but 您 might). Promote the sign-up regularly. See how Sonia added it to the end of my post? Nice and easy suggestion to help people, no hard sell.

http://twohourbusinessplan.com

    Hehehe, yeah, 您 can ‘gunna’那!

@利昂利基(或‘nitch’ – really dislike that pronunciation) is exactly what 您 said –一个非常具体的狭义目标市场。

您r 32 years experience will be invaluable in what 您’re doing online.

  55. @ Lia 的P.S. blurb is just to get 您 to click the link and read the landing page for our newsletter, which goes on and on (and on) about how it’与常规的Copyblogger供稿/电子邮件列表不同。 --

该列表中的所有内容在今天都是如此,特别是关于看起来像个小滑手— because I’ve seen many businesses like this! Looking professional is really important. Afterall, 您r website 和 rest of 您r marketing materials are the face of 您r business — so it’廉价出售它们永远是不明智的!

  57. I guess #6 is more to do with lack of confidence which makes 您 feel 您 are missing 某事. 您 end up postponing productive activity for meaningless monotonous tasks.

一世’我认识很多人“sucky attitude” It’s like they are doing 您 a favour even doing business with 您!

  59. I appreciate the insight of point #2 here regarding the niche. Defining it as an area with a common 问题 instead of simply splashing 您r blog out to “任何在家工作的人”很完美。

  60. I am going to have to take 您 to task over number 3.

Number two is soooooo important, especially when the customer pool is very incestuous, like the blogging arena, or the small biz arena. I have been guilty of marketing to more of a demographic myself, and I thank 您 for pointing that out.

When 您 are not solving a 问题 for the customer, 您 are not showing them how 您r business is going to help them, 和y definitely don’t care about 您, so 您 have to solve their 问题 or 您 will sink.

Good 文章 though, nice to see a few other people have made these mistakes, shows that 您 can pull through and come out better off at the other end.

  63. 我想我’ve broken about…

  64. I seriously like 您r distinction between demographics and a niche.

归根结底,’s about connecting at the values of the tribe and solving meaningful 问题s in that niche.

    谢谢 for 您r post.

的niche vs demographic definition really hit me between the eyes. Once I share my blog title 您 will know why.

    http://BabyBoomerTalkOnline.com

At 8 months of blogging (with this current blog) and almost 400 posts, I am at a crossroads of how to take the blog to the next level. I struggled last night and thru the day today (Thurs. here in the US) with 您r post.

So do I take each 问题, blog about it, and offer a solution to my readers that they can purchase? Is it really that simple? As bloggers do we make things toooo complicated.

@弥敦道’s a great point and I think 您’完全正确。但是营销人员按下的按钮“this is the magic bullet that will give 您 instant success” and we fall for it.

    什么’s the rule of 24?

@露丝,哈哈,那一个’s are fun to fool with, then leave and go somewhere that wants to serve 您.

Yes! Targeting more specifically will improve 您r marketing, make sure it’s directed at the right people and increase 您r sales. No doubt about it.

那里’s a balance there between spending as much as 您 need to and as little as 您 can.

  69. @ 乔希ua, thank 您. Love seeing 您 around in the comments!

    @ Jodi,LOLOLOL!

只要认出他们是嘘声,不要’t do it again….

@ Michele, what 您 don’t do is often as important as what 您 do do. As long as 您’re taking action, 您’ll do fine.

我差点没做’t include it, eek!

    @ Samuel, thank

I read this yesterday in my feed reader and was amazed to find myself mentioning

And they found it a really useful perspective so I had to come back here, read the whole post again more slowly and thank 您. Great advice delivered with a smile.

对…我的哥哥马克今天早上给我摘录,我们’d emailed back and forth with ideas and thoughts on 您r niche point [which seems to have exercised everyone!].We’d几个月前已经在索尼娅(Sonia)之一工作过’关于类似主题的文章,旨在为我们的利基市场开发价值产品和承诺。

And just now as I was sipping some red wine to celebrate a fab week I was looking at the Mashable 文章s and started reading 您rs.

… [deep breath and happy dance in the background] using heaps of the tools 您 and other writers have shared.

    • and my brother pointed out that I mentioned 您 guys as mashable when we know 您’re copyblogger!

and this is just 一 more thing to remember when 您 blog … always be prepared to admit 您r mistakes …

These were very good points that 您 made. I have a website that I guess is more like a hobby. I would like for it to be more of a business but I spend too much time reading ebooks and listening to webinars and not taking enough proper action. I need to change my attitude about this online business.

我想我 am focusing on pregnant moms.

  75. I especially agree with number 4, not capturing the details of 您r customers. This is essential to success in business, is the ability to continually follow up (and add value) to 您r customers.

@ Walter, I love 您r wording of ‘peel back the layers’ that’正是它是什么。 LOL

@ 丽兹,很高兴’s been of use to 您 and best of luck with 您r launch (Hey, send me the link!)

@布拉德,它’ll become a business when 您 get 您r head around it. Having a hobby is fine, if that’s all 您 want. 什么 do 您 really want?

Thank 您 so much for the post! It surely reflects my current condition. I have to invest in my blog if I have to attract some quality prospects who can pay me good money for my services.
Anyway, 您r post came as a blessing to look at my blogging keener.

    Loved 您r post. Great points!

Presenting a professional image is absolutely vital for 您r business. 您 only get ONE chance to make a first impression. “Cheap” is no good!

Great 文章 and great advice! Thank 您!

甚至SquareSpace(easy)都需要花费一些时间来导航,以创建可呈现的东西。

And yes, please have a business plan. All too often most business owners think they can just craft 一 when the time is right. Well, the time was right when 您 decided on the idea 您 were going to run with for a business.

  81. Thank 您 for pointing out some very basic but very important points about marketing. i think we all tend to jump in with both feet, get over excited, and not really think.

什么 a great post, I see myself making these mistakes and hopefully not for too long. I have been 您r site, it is pretty neat! I like what 您 doing and thanks for the wisdom. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up on other silly thing that business suffers.

谢谢 for the motivation to get moving again, Melinda. 的great thing about this 文章 is how beautifully 您’ve总结了我们成功的最大障碍。

  84. Great post with some really good advice. It takes time to build a successful online marketing campaign and more people need to read this and become aware of that. A great looking website and also considering SEO can really add to the effectiveness of 您r campaign.

I am posting my first comment again below to see if I could get 您r response to my struggles.

      Eight months and 400 posts?

好吧,我’ve had a quick look at 您r site and I think 您r issue goes a bit deeper than taking it to the next level. My first impression is “Who’s it for?” 您’ve got 您r blog on the front page with a million excerpts of posts and nothing is jumping out at me, to say READ ME!

但我不知道’t think 您’re using it as well as 您 could.

But to answer 您r original question with a few more questions:

什么’s the purpose of 您r site and blog? Is it a hobby or a business? (your legal disclaimer 说 it’s a personal blog)

WHO’s 您r target market? 什么 are 您 doing for them that no 一 else is doing? Why would they read YOUR posts? 什么’s the value that 您’re offering them?

什么’s the ONE THING that 您 really really want to do for 您r readers?

  86. ang!

我喜欢态度– that can’t be said enough.

  89. Last point is correct to my case as 您 can learn all the time but no success if 您 do not take any actions 🙂 Great 文章!

I always thought niche is a group of people with similar interests. It was 您r brilliance which made escape the delusion.

  91. I agree with all of 您r points, but #6 in particular. I fell into this category for quite a long time. I read and read and read, thinking that I was going to eventually know exactly what to do and be a success overnight. This of course never happened, because all I did was read.

Once I finally started DOING, I was amazed that things actually started happening. Learning is important, but DOING is what gets 您 there.

它’s just not worth it.

Also i think its 某事 quite important to get the data of the users, so 您 can define 您r target market and define strategies.

  94. It all comes down to writing for 您r readers, providing valuable, relevant content for them in a way that is professional, caring, consistent and dependable!
