In a 好 economy, you can do reasonably well with “good enough.”
Good enough design, 好 enough marketing, 好 enough skills.
Unfortunately, we’re not in a 好 economy. We’re in a wretched economy. Industries all over the 世界 是 falling like bowling pins, and “good enough” professionals in all fields 是 scrambling.
Don’t you want to smack 那 guy sometimes? How 是 you supposed to get to the top? And how 是 you supposed to pay 您的 bills until you figure 那 out?
您 can do them. And you 必须 do them. Good enough isn’t 好 enough anymore.
Find out what you’re better at than anyone in the 世界
您’re probably not going to be the 大est copywriter or 大est web designer or the 大est dry cleaner on the face of the planet.
您’re going to be the 大est in 您的 世界. The 大est copywriter for Dallas high-end commercial real estate, or Orange County chiropractors, or for B2B direct marketing in Bangalore.
您’re going to find a 世界 small enough, and then work 您的 tail off to make 您的 self the 大est Doer-of-the-Thing-You-Do in 那 世界.
Sometimes you create a 世界 of one. I’m the 世界’s 大est practitioner of Sonia-style marketing. (I nip at his heels to keep him honest, but he’s still the 大est.) 赛斯 is the 世界’s foremost 赛斯 .
Being “the 世界’s 大est you” isn’t an excuse to slack off, though. It means 那 every day you show up and 尝试 to do 您的 thing a little better than you did yesterday.
Find a viable 商业 model
If it’s a 商业, you’ve got to get paid.
Sometimes there 是 multiple strong 商业 models for what you do, and it’s a matter of picking the one 那 suits you best. Sometimes one strategy will stand out.
And sometimes, what you do is a very enjoyable passion, but it 确实 n’t form the kernel of a 商业.
A viable 商业 model isn’t a matter of will power or can-do attitude. The customers 是 either there or they 是 n’t.
Find something 那 gives you 果汁
Running a 大 商业, even a 商业 of one, isn’t easy.
您’re going to have to be stubborn. 您’re going to have to get past hurdles 那 make you uncomfortable. 您’re going to have to give some things up, especially when you’re getting started. 您’re going to have to care. A lot.
And you’ll never do 那 if 您的 商业 bores you to tears.
理解— you don’t have to necessarily love real estate to be 最好的 agent in 您的 well-defined 世界. 您 might love negotiation, or you might love the type of clients you focus on, or you might love playing matchmaker between houses and buyers.
But you’ve got to adore something about it. It’s got to give you 果汁. It’s got to 使你更坚强。
I’d heard 大 things about Jim Collins’ book for years, but I never read it.
And from what I’ve seen, most of them couldn’t effectively manage a hamburger stand, much less run a 大 company.
但后来我读了谢东熙的 传递幸福谢天谢谢 确实 run a 大 company, and he found 好极了 essential reading. If I can pick up a $14 book 那 made Tony Hsieh smarter about 商业, don’t you think I should?
So I did. And it’s brilliant. 但是我 can also see why it failed.
Collins (or more accurately, his team of researchers) found another common element in 大 companies. It’s certainly the case with Hsieh.
您’ve got to love the 商业 more than you do 您的 own ego.
The leaders of Collins’ 大 companies were, without exception. personally humble and self-effacing, but they were fanatically passionate and driven to make 其 companies succeed.
(If 您的 CEO is in 商业 for these things, start looking for a way out now. Luckily, mine isn’t).
如果你’re crazy in love with the market you serve, the product you create, and the 好 那 you do in the 世界 (even if 那 好 is a bit frivolous …
那’s why 好极了 didn’t create a million 大 companies. Every executive in America read it and puffed up with pride. “Why, we’re in luck! Humble and self-effacing, 那’s me to a tee!”
But you’re more honest than 那. 您 have the potential to level with 您的 self, and to step up 您的 game.

Agreed. This is the key.
However, 大 is not always recognized within a person’的一生。

Our basic 目的 is to help 其他. 那 is why it works in 商业 and in life.
Have you ever noticed 那 often when we get old, our ability to help diminishes. But our desire to still be helpful is there. My mother at the age of 90 has really slowed down physically. But she always wants to help. Even if it means holding the door for me or making room for me when I sit down to the table.
“Good to Great”是一本优秀的读物;一世’m due to reread it.
One quibble: whatever someone is 好 at, there has to be a viable market for 那 thing!
是啊“Good to Great” is one of the first 商业 books I read and it really helped me get in the right mindset. I found it really comforting to know 那 Level 5 leaders were both self-efficacious but humble.
在您走下这条路之前“Good to Great,” you 必须 first realize 那 you’re the former instead of the latter. Unfortunately, as you said, most companies have monstrous egos and they rarely realize 那 they’re running a “good” company.
So, the question is, how can you convince people 那 they’re running a “good” 商业? Because once you do 那, encouraging these people to follow 您的 four steps would be much easier, wouldn’t you agree?
那’s a 大 point.
I love reading Copyblogger . Sonia! I used to live in Analysis Paralysis hell, until one day it finally got through to me 那 even when I think something isn’t 好 enough after countless revisions it is in my best interest to keep things moving.
德里克
This is a 大 comment.
现在我’m getting more questioning 那.
倾听– acting – being humbled…yeah…that’s the ticket.
我的计划有点轨迹…I started out half-ass to 好 enough, then on to better, and I’m eventually going for 大. I have a lot to learn, and I’m comfortable with 那.
I 尝试 and plug away every day, learn from 其他, keep quiet when appropriate, vow to not make the same ‘社交媒体错误’不止一次,而且工作真的非常努力。
It’很难遵循的建议,但是’s very 好 advice to 尝试 跟随。
I conduct 好极了 seminars here in the Philippines. And I really like 您的 presentation of the 刺猬概念.
我很高兴她赞美利基市场营销的优点和好处– she calls it “being the 大est,” I call it “being the expert.”
是的,它’s incredibly important to be 最好的 那 you can be, but you have to be “the best” to be the most successful. Is 赛斯 Godin 最好的 marketer in the 世界? Maybe, but probably not. He just happens to be incredibly 好 at what he 确实 , and he’非常有名,很喜欢。
一旦您’re one of 最好的, you should work 您的 tail off to be 最好的 known and 最好的 liked.
我喜欢读Brian和Sonia不仅仅是因为他们’re really 好 at what they do, even though 那’是很大的一部分,也是因为无论出于何种原因我都喜欢它们。
With 那 said, 索尼娅 Brian, and 赛斯 是 all 大 at what they do, so maybe 大ness has more to do with it than I think…
True, and I would never claim to be the --
但是我’ve created an approach 那’是策略,战术和心态的结合,而我’m 最好的 at my approach. 🙂 So as I said, sometimes you create 您的 own “world” to be best in.
My dry cleaner is 最好的 dry cleaner in my neighborhood. No one crosses town for a 大 dry cleaner. So often it’关于定义和重新定义“the 世界.”
嗯….I really like the dry cleaner example. 您 only have to be 最好的 in 您的 世界.
我以为给我果汁的利基没有’t supply it in all 是 as. What gives me 果汁 is DOING what I love in 那 niche. But the teaching aspect of 那 niche (which is what would make the niche profitable)? I don’t enjoy 那, despite the supply of content.
In my own 商业/life, I’ve found 那’s a never-ending set of questions and observations. Watching what gives you 那 buzz of energy and what drains 那 energy.
Sometimes you can partner with 其他人 to do the part 那 drains 您的 battery, or sometimes you can figure out a way (say, buiding a course with audio or video) 那 drains you but you only have to do it for a limited time.
Absolutely! 那 was a brilliant course. (I can say 那 because I had nothing to do with putting it together, I was just a grateful consumer.)
Such a 大 post, loved the line, “You’ve got to love the 商业 more than you do 您的 own ego.” It’s so true
“Why, we’re in luck! Humble and self-effacing, 那’s me to a tee!”
(Elie Wiesel)
谢谢–now off to become 大…
I’m on the right 路径。
BHAG– Big Hairy Audacious Goal is also a critical part of defining 您的 path to 大ness too. I’ve seen many 商业es handicap 其 success by thinking too small.
Stanford, 大 reference to Collin’s other book “Built To Last”.
当然,我们都有目标–短期和长期– but a BHAG by definition is HUGE and inspirational and something 那 has a sense of reasonable applicability to our core strengths.
那’是不现实的’ve reminded me, it’s not necessary. I’m already living my passion: creating effective content for my clients, and being part of the work they do 所以我们ll.
It’s my clients 那 supply the “juice” — every time they’re satisfied with a project, every time they ask me to take on another, and every time they pay 其 bills, it reinforces 那 I’m on the right 路径。
现在,我觉得’m 好 at delivering communications solutions for my clients. Developing a competency in social media marketing tools and putting them to work for my clients is the smartest path I can see to get to 大.
I knew from the start 那 there would be a lot of competition, but I had faith in my ability to write. I am nowhere near 最好的 yet, but I am always looking for ways to improve the product I produce. This blog has just helped me to realize 那 I am on the right track.
再次,我爱Zappos… but not 其 商业 model. 🙂
索尼娅,我’m not just quibbling over details. 这里’s my point –
那’s a cool perspective as a consumer, but not as a 商业 owner.
2.有些人需要爱上“business” of 商业, instead of expecting 其 company to give them “purpose” or reflect 其 “identity”. This opens you up to the many ways to make 您的 商业 大 那 has nothing to do with what you like.
For instance, how many ways can you make a show store 大?
Zappos competitor, Genesco makes $2 for every $1 那 it spends. Payless doubled its earning in 2006 and also enjoys wider margins than Zappos.
Zappos?即使在2008年,该公司裁员8%’s hailed as a 大 place to work.
它’s not sexy to pattern 您的 商业 after Payless rather than Zappos, but it might just open you up to the many ways to be 大!
My first thought was where can I get one of those? Great pic and 大 post, as always!
Ok, now take me from 大 to awesome!
My memories of narcissistic sociopaths come from small 商业, which somehow makes them scarier. Fewer places to hide, I suppose.
Many of these people never even think about being 大. They tell themselves they want to make some money, take a half-hearted stab at production and promotion, then can’弄清楚为什么客户不是’敲门。
I’m struggling to do 那 lately, but this post lights a faint, but followable footpath through the dark, scary forest of target market research.
My path from 好 to 大 has been paved with relationships.
Humility and a drive to give people what they want and need were important, but they came later. The first step (since I had no clue as to how to be a copywriter) was to fumble around 目的ly until I found someone who did.
love this post. always informative no matter what line of 商业 you 是 in! xx peggybraswelldesign.com
Great post. I noticed someone mentioning 您的 line about loving the 商业 more than ego. I would add something to 那 – It’s also important not to fall in love with an idea. When we do 那, we start to believe our own mental publicity and 是 unable to see clearly. I am reminded of 赛斯 G’预定蘸料。
The 大ness thing is a toughie for us perfectionists. I recently shipped a product and was very proud of it, could it be better?
谢谢 for the kick today

– guess in life as in 商业 you need to be prepared for the unexpected!

copyblogger and all the folks associated with it
Hey Sonia! This is one of 最好的 posts of 您的 s 那 I’ve ever read, and I’ve read a lot. Don’t get me wrong, I think all of 您的 posts 是 好, but this one’s 大!
I loved this 文章 and thought it was insightful to apply it this way in the context of smaller 商业es.
一世’ve spent the last year establishing a blog 那 talks to all of this.
Without 那 sense of somehow being on a mission, I suspect I’d很久以前就放弃了!
Really enjoyable read and I can take on advice from each of the points you have made throughout the post. I feel 那 one of the most important aspects is to have passion and have a strong belief in what you 是 writing about. If the reader can see 那 you believe in the product they 是 more inclined to feel the same way.
I will have another look at my 商业-plan after I’ve read this.
– The important do’s and don’ts
– 您 can come up with possible improvements for each 是 a of 商业 and how they affect each other
一世’我处于业务重组阶段,而我’ve just recently changed my mindset from what I want to what my potential clients want. I realized a couple of weeks ago 那 I was putting out there what I THOUGHT my potential clients needed. Instead, I am now interested in seeing what it is they need and go from there.
一世’m now more INTERESTED in 其他 instead of interesting to them. 谢谢 , thank you, thank you for this much needed post.
To me, the most interesting part of this 那’缺少99%的“do what you love” 文章 s I’ve read is the “寻找可行的商业模式”部分。 ve专注于你的’擅长于做自己喜欢做的事,然后… realize no one wants to pay you to do 那. IMO, 那 piece of the puzzle is the hardest.
Sonia 那s why you rock this was so cool sorry i just got to read it I am late 🙂
真知灼见–我所有成功的人’ve met 是 much more passionate about the cause they work for, rather than 其 personal advancement. Personal ego is easily the biggest thing 那 gets in the way of making an enterprise successful. The biggest sign of an ego is the need to be right all the time. 您 know what, no one is right all the time!
谢谢 for a 大 read.
最好,
所以我想,我们可以取消第四步,并在第三类下添加“Find something 那 gives you 果汁” – money should not be 您的 only source of 果汁.
您r writing inspires me.
I just wanted to make sure 那 you knew it.

Letting go of my ego and more importantly the pride 那 came along with it is what made the difference in our 商业 succeeding. Pride still get’s in the way of my success sometimes, but I recognize 那 it’是一个问题,请尝试尽可能避免它(加上我的妻子偶尔会在提醒我时’阻碍了我们的成功)。
When I read the title of this 文章 . I was hoping for a self evaluation form 那 would detemine if I was 好 or 大. Interesting post.
Fabulous post! Each and every person has 大ness within him or her. We 是 here, in this lifetime, to express 那 大ness to its full potential. By express, I mean develop and share for the 大er 好 of all.
那里’s a part of us 那 say’s we suck, or we can’因为,或者我们(通过内部批判者)以任何手段驱使我们(或者公司,社会,政府)…。)
When we hit recognize 那 we’ve hit the ‘pause’ button on or sabotage on our 大ness its time to mindfully examine how we 是 resisting the fullest projection of our authentic expression. Then do the hokey pokey and turn ourselves around.
(FEAR)– for not getting to 大 is 那 resistance, the saying NO to YOU, I speak of.
需要一点点莫克西– the confident courage to express our authentic 大ness no matter what – to turn ourselves around. The 好 news is everything we need to 必须 er up a little moxie is already within us as our birthright.
We were born bundles of 好ness here to become and provide 大ness.
唐’t be concerned with the fame of doing 大 work just get satisfaction from doing 您的 best and helping other people be 其 best.
